The Wildcats returned to the field on Tuesday to begin their 2017 season with an afternoon matchup at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood.
After a pair of early fouls called on the Wildcats, senior Fergus Bunn (Melbourne, Australia) slotted a pass through to Riley Shea (Broomfield, Colo.) who kicked the ball in from about nine yards out to put the 'Cats up 1-0 at the 6:57 mark. At 10:04, Michael Genge (Broomfield, Colo.) was called into action for the first time, making a save on an attempt by CCU's Larson Hanlin. Genge made another stop in the 16th minute, denying Nathan Flack.
Kyler Fowkes (Arvada, Colo.) put a shot on frame in the 35th minute but CCU's Taylor Budzinski made the save. The Cougars made another attempt just before the halftime whistle but the attempt went high as JWU took a 1-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, Genge made another save in the 52nd minute to keep the one goal advantage for Johnson & Wales. The Cougars kept their offensive pressure on but the Wildcat's defense came up with the stops they needed to hold on for the 1-0 season opening victory.
Genge made four saves for the Wildcats and notched his first shutout of the season.
The Wildcats will host (RV) Bellevue University on Thursday at 3:30 PM at Aurora Sports Park.
