'Cats capture season opening win

'Cats capture season opening win

Johnson & Wales headed to Michigan to begin their inaugural NCAA Division III season at the Briton Invitational hosted by Albion College.

In the opening match of 2018, the Wildcats faced off against Lawrence University from Appleton, Wisconsin. JWU's Daniel Perez (Las Vegas, Nev.) had a pair of attempts saved by LU's Cole Kelez in the 10th and 12th minutes. The Vikings broke through the 'Cats defense in the 14th minute as Nicholas Jatta put a shot past Alexis Araiza (Dallas, Texas). Kyler Fowkes (Arvada, Colo.) put JWU level in the 19th minute, placing a shot past Kelez to tie the match 1-1. The early minutes of the game saw JWU's offense just a step off as they were called offsides a couple of times in the opening 20 minutes. An attempt by Oscar Elias (Lake Elsinor, Calif.) was saved by Kelez as the 'Cats looked for the equalizer. Elias found the back of the net in the 35th minute, earning his first goal of the season. Another attempt just 30 seconds later was again saved by Kelez.

Perez continued to look to make his way onto the scoreboard in the 55th minute but his attempt went wide of frame. Araiza made the stop in the 61st minute on an attempt by Brendan Vellenga. Lemi Abera (Denver, Colo.) had two shots saved in the 66th and 73rd minutes. Elias and Emad Mohammed (Darfur, Sudan) continued to look for an insurance goal for the Wildcats late in the game but Kelez made the save on both of the attempts. The 'Cats held off the Viking's late shots to secure the 2-1 season opening win.

Elias led Johnson & Wales with four shots on goal and both Perez and Abera had two shots on frame each. Araiza made one save in the win.

Johnson & Wales will face Marian University on Saturday at 12:00pm MDT at Albion College.
