JWU gets first conference win

JWU gets first conference win

The Wildcats grabbed their first SCAC victory of the season on Friday afternoon at Schreiner University.

Brandon Coder (Longmont, Colo.) started in goal for JWU against the Mountaineers and was called into action in the ninth minute. Coder made the save on the attempt from Remington Shappa and added a second save two minutes later. The Wildcat's first attempt came from Alexis Araiza (Dallas, Texas) who saw his shot go wide of frame in the 24th minute. Just before the halftime whistle, Kyler Fowkes (Arvada, Colo.) took a pass from Logan Moore (Aurora, Colo.) and put the ball past SU's Brandon Anselmi to give JWU the 1-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, Coder made the stop on an attempt by Ryan Dobbs in the 53rd minute. A pair of attempts were off target for the Wildcats in the 55th minute as Johnson & Wales looked to double their lead. Each side had a shot saved in the 76th and 77th minutes as the two goalkeepers kept stepping up. JWU was able to hold off the Mountaineer's offense and grab their first conference win of the season.

Fowkes and Daniel Perez (Las Vegas, Nev.) each had a shot on goal for Johnson & Wales and Coder finished with four saves for the Wildcats. Shappa had two shots on goal for Schreiner and Anselmi had one save.

Johnson & Wales (3-3-1, 1-3-1 SCAC) will head to #9 Trinity University (5-0-1, 3-0-0 SCAC) on Sunday.
