The Wildcats headed to Texas to take on Southwestern University on Friday in an SCAC matchup.
Southwestern looked to make an early mark, but Brandon Coder (Longmont, Colo.) had the stop on SU's sixth minute attempt. The hosts continued to pressure Johnson & Wales but their attempts went off target in the next few minutes. Theo Perisic forced Coder to make the save on his attempt in the 21st minute to keep the game scoreless. In the 32nd minute, Lemi Abera (Arjo, Ethiopia) put a shot on goal that SU's Alan Carr was forced to make the stop on. On the resulting corner kick, Abera again had his shot on goal saved by Carr. The Wildcats had found some momentum late in the first half, but took the 0-0 game into the break.
Abera broke through in the 54th minute, taking a pass from Emad Bashir-Mohammed (Darfur, Sudan) and beating Carr to lead 1-0. Southwestern had a shot on goal after the restart but Coder again had the stop to keep the Wildcats up 1-0. The two sides continued to press each other throughout the second but saw the other side's defense step up and force the off target attempts. Coder had another save in the 84th minute and the Wildcat's defense had three big blocks in the final five minutes to preserve the 1-0 win.
Abera led JWU with the goal and three shots on frame while Coder had four saves for the Wildcats in the win.
Johnson & Wales (5-6-1, 3-6-1 SCAC) will take on Texas Lutheran University (7-5-0, 6-4-0 SCAC) on Sunday at 11:00am MT in Seguin, Texas.
