Wildcats begin weekend with 3-1 victory

The Wildcats kicked off their final weekend of the season on Friday with an afternoon match against Schreiner University.

The early moments of the game was highlighted by the two sides trying to get a feel for each other. Daniel Perez (Las Vegas, Nev.) broke through in the 18th minute with a deflected shot sent to the upper right corner. Brandon Coder (Longmont, Colo.) made the save on a header attempt in the 22nd minute to keep the one goal advantage. In the 26th minute, Kevin Zazueta (Aurora, Colo.) sent a ball through to Emad Bashir-Mohammed (Darfur, Sudan) who put it to the bottom right, past SU's Brandon Anselmi to give JWU the 2-0 advantage. Lemi Abera (Arjo, Ethiopia) saw his attempt saved by Anselmi two minutes later.

JWU continued to pressure but kept their two goal advantage going into the break.

Just after the start of the second half, Kyler Fowkes (Arvada, Colo.) gave Johnson & Wales the 3-0 lead in the 48th minute, scoring his 5th of the season. The Mountaineers started to pressure Johnson & Wales with three shots on frame over a five minute span but Coder made all three stops to keep the clean sheet going. Bahsir-Mohammed had a header saved in the 56th minute as the Wildcats looked to add to their lead. Schreiner got on the board in the 74th minute as Alex Trandai took a pass from Allan Rayo and beat Coder to the lower right corner. A late attempt by Perez went high as the Wildcats held on for the 3-1 victory.

Bashir-Mohammed led the Wildcats with two shots on goal and Coder finished with five saves. The Wildcats held the 15-13 lead in shots.

JWU will host #3 Trinity on Sunday at 12:00pm at Aurora Sports Park to close out their 2018 campaign.
