Denver – Slow starts continued to doom the Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team in a 3-1 loss to St. Thomas on Friday at Aurora Sports Park.

The visiting Celts (2-2-0) scored in the 7th minute on an unassisted goal by Andy Garcia to establish control, forcing the Wildcats (0-4-1) to play from behind in a non-league matchup between the two newest members of the SCAC.

After a fairly even first 45 minutes in which the Celts totaled six shots and the Wildcats four, St. Thomas pulled away with two more scores from Carlos Marquez to build a 3-0 lead. Marquez's first goal came in the 53rd minute, assisted by Heiko Leinweber, before Marquez converted a penalty kick in the 79th minute after JWU goalkeeper Erick Torres receieved a red card.

Junior Emad Bashir-Mohammed put the Wildcats on the board with a header off a corner from freshman Josh Guzman to make it 3-1 in the final 10 minutes.

The Wildcats totaled a season-high 17 shots, including eight by Bashir-Mohammed and three each by senior Alexis Araiza and junior Dohnovyn Jackson.

JWU returns to ASP Sunday for another non-conference match against league foe Centenary (1 p.m.).
