Late goals send Wildcats to Senior Night win

DENVER - A pair of goals in the final 15 minutes carried the Johnson & Wales University men's team to a 2-0 win over visiting Schreiner University on Saturday night at Aurora Sports Park.

Sophomore AJ Watters gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute when he punched home a rebound in front to the lower middle for his third goal of the season. The play started with a corner kick by freshman Josh Guzman, whose passed it to classmate Francisco Cigarroa from the right side. Cigarroa's strike from outside the 18 clanged off the post and trickled right to Watters, who didn't hesitate to put it away.

Six minutes later, JWU Denver (3-13-1, 2-6) scored again on a second effort when freshman Albara Mutleq shot from the deep right was punched away by Schreiner keeper Cody Smith. Guzman was there to gather the loose ball and then alluded a defender with a move to the middle before beating Smith to the lower left.

Junior Zac Collins earned his first victory by making six saves to record the shutout.

Scoring opportunities were hard to come by for much of the contest on a frigid night at ASP, but eventually JWU opened things up down the stretch in the second half.

Eight different Wildcats had at least one shot attempt, including two each by senior Alexis Araiza, junior Dohnovyn Jackson and Mutleq

Before the Senior Night match, JWU honored senior defender Austin Coder, who appeared in his 41st match with the program and made his 25th start.

Winners of two of their past three matchups, the Wildcats head to Colorado Springs on Friday to finish out the 2019 season against Colorado College.
