GOLDEN – Normally the indoor track and field season is a lead-up to the spring outdoor campaign, but not this year for Alberto Rodriguez.
The Johnson & Wales University senior is not eligible for the spring outdoor season, so he's giving it everything he has for the winter slate, which began for the Wildcats on Friday at the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi.
Rodriguez (San Jacinto, Calif.) won his heat of the 1-mile run with at time of 4:35.68, good for fifth-place overall. Rodriguez was also fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:05.23.
"It is going to be a little bit different," Rodriguez said. "Right off the bat I want to make sure that I'm giving it my all. I don't want to make this a preemptive season to outdoor."
Rodriguez paced himself perfectly to win his heat of the 1 mile over Kenny Rennick (unattached), waiting for the second half of the race to make his move and vault to the front of the pack. John Jacob was ninth in the 800 while Bryce Moore took 10th in both the 800 and 1 mile.
Rebecca Brock placed seventh in the 800-meter run for the JWU Denver women's squad. Brock (Amarillo, Texas) crossed in 2:40.03, ahead of teammate Rachel Seligson who placed eighth. Seligson (Palo Alto, Calif.) edged Brock in the 1-mile, however, by a margin of just 0.09 seconds with a time of 6:21.10 to finish 10th.
Jenna Bonfardine and Catherine Carbeck both finished in the top 15 in the 60-meter dash.
