Wildcats come up short against Doane

The Wildcats continued their home weekend on Friday evening when they hosted Doane University.

After a 4-0 run to start the game, the Tigers saw Johnson & Wales rally back to take a 7-6 lead off a McCorra Ford (Gillette, Wyo.) jumper at 6:46. The Tigers went up 12-7 on the 'Cats but JWU again surged back to come within two points. Doane had another small scoring runt hat allowed them to take the 18-15 lead into the second quarter.

The Tigers started the second with a 24-17 lead before Johnson & Wales cut the lead down to six points off a Vanessa Maestas (Thornton, Colo.) three pointer. The Tigers added another bucket just before half to take the 31-23 advantage after 20 minutes of play.

Both teams started strong in the third quarter, trading buckets to keep the game close. Ford had a layup at 7:06 to come within five points. JWU cut the deficit to four off a pair of free throws by Cara McNiff (Aurora, Colo.). In the fourth, the Tigers offense stretched the lead to 15 points midway through the quarter. The Wildcats weren't able to sustain the offense they needed to rally and fell 47-66 to Doane.

Ford had 14 points for Johnson & Wales and brought down nine rebounds for the Wildcats. Hanah Barnard had 26 points for the Tigers.

Johnson & Wales will close out the weekend on Saturday night when they host #14 Concordia University.
