JWU traveled to Sterling, Kansas on Friday for the first of two games at the Sterling College Classic. The first contest saw the 'Cats take on the host Warriors.
The Warriors opened the game on a 9-0 run before Vanessa Maestas (Thornton, Colo.) hit a three pointer to get the 'Cats on the board. JWU battled back to cut the Sterling lead to five with 4:27 to play in the first quarter. By the early second quarter, Johnson & Wales and cut the Warriors lead down to four as the Warriors led 21-17. The Warriors built their lead back up to 12 to take the 36-24 lead into the break.
In the third quarter the Warriors started to build some distance as they extended their lead to to 16 with three minutes left in the quarter. Throughout the final minutes of the game, Johnson & Wales kept trying to keep the Warriors in check but Sterling kept their lead hovering around 20 points in the last quarter. JWU fell 54-76 against the Warriors in the opening contest of the weekend.
McCorra Ford (Gillette, Wyo.) led Johnson & Wales with 20 points and brought down nine rebounds. Three Warriors had 14 points each and Jessica Princ had seven rebounds.
The 'Cats will take on Tabor College on Saturday at 1:00pm CST.
