Johnson & Wales found themselves down early on Saturday in an A.I.I. matchup against Central Christian College.
The host Tigers held the early 7-1 lead after four minutes of play but the 'Cats started to make some headway. Neither team shot well to start but after the first 10 minutes, Central Christian held the 13-5 lead. JWU's offense started to heat up in the second quarter as the 'Cats rallied to go up 16-14 on Central Christian. The two teams traded leads with Central Christian holding the 24-23 advantage at the break.
In the second half, the Wildcats went on a 14-0 run to go up 37-24 on CCC. After the slow start to the second half, the Tiger's offense started to pick up and they cut into the 'Cats lead. After three quarters of play, Johnson & Wales had a lead of 10. In the fourth, the Wildcats pushed their lead back up to 17 points before Central Christian's offense got going. The Tigers fought back but JWU maintained their momentum and held on for the 71-51 win.
Cara McNiff (Aurora, Colo.) had a game high 23 points and was 7 of 12 from three point range. McCorra Ford (Gillette, Wyo.) had 16 points and 23 rebounds for JWU. Abbie Banks had 18 points for Central Christian and four players had six rebounds each.
The Wildcats will travel to Espanola, New Mexico this weekend for a Friday matchup against College of the Ozarks.
