The Widlcats began their last weekend of the regular season on Friday night at Northern New Mexico College.
The host Eagles found some early momentum in the contest, jumping out to a 7-2 lead through the first three minutes. The 'Cats cut into the lead only to see NNMC push their lead back up. JWU fought back through the final few minutes of the quarter to cut the lead down to 16-17. The Wildcats went ahead on the first play of the second quarter but NNMC pushed their lead back up to 31-23. The 'Cats put together a small scoring run, but trailed 27-34 at the break.
For most of the third quarter, the Eagles maintained their lead but Johnson & Wales was able to come within five points at the end of the third. The Eagles came out firing to start the fourth and pushed their led up to double digits. JWU was able to make up some ground late but fell 64-72.
McCorra Ford (Gillette, Wyo.) led all players with 25 points and had a game high 10 rebounds. Andromeda Sales (Black Hawk, Colo.) added 12 points for Johnson & Wales. Demetria Clichee had 20 points and RaeAnne Herrera brought down 10 boards.
The two teams will compete again on Saturday to wrap up the regular season.
