Royals edge Wildcats on Saturday

The Wildcats closed out the weekend with a Saturday afternoon contest against Hope International on the campus of Arizona Christian.

The opening minutes were a back and forth start to the game with Hope International holding the two point lead four and a half minutes into the game. A small run by the Royals allowed them to go up 13-5 at the five minute mark. The 'Cats came back to take a 15-14 lead off a Briana Aluya (Placentia, Calif.) jumpshot. After the opening 10 minutes, HIU held the 17-15 advantage. In the second quarter the Royals pushed their lead up to double digits but the Wildcats were able to cut the lead down to nine points at the break.

In the second half, the Wildcats began the third quarter with four quick points to pull within five points. The Wildcat's offense started to heat up as they pulled within two points at 4:33 with a jumper by Salma Oros (Buckeye, Ariz.). A late run by HIU allowed them to go back up by nine points at the end of the third. Throughout the fourth the Wildcats would try to to make a small run to make the game close but Hope International maintained their lead to hold off JWU and take the 74-65 win.

Andromeda Sales (Black Hawk, Colo.) led Johnson & Wales with 24 points and Cara McNiff (Aurora, Colo.) added 11 more. Aluya had 10 points and 11 rebounds to notch her second double-double of the season. A pair of Royals had 13 points and Emma Forel finished with 15 rebounds.

Johnson & Wales will open their home schedule on Tuesday with a 5:00pm contest against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the Wildcats Center.
