JWU women's basketball drops season opener

DENVER – The Johnson & Wales women's basketball team opened the 2018-19 season with a 76-42 loss to visiting Mississippi University for Women (MUW) on Friday night at the Wildcat Center.

Freshman guard Katey Guzman led the Wildcats (0-1) with 15 points to go with four rebounds and four assists. Backcourt-mate Brianna Bailey added 10 points, three rebounds and three assists for JWU.

The Wildcats got off to a rough start, falling behind 10-2 midway through the opening quarter. JWU bounced back from a tough offensive first frame and posted double digits in both the second (13) and third quarters (15).

Ashley Mortensen gave the Wildcats a boost off the bench with six points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist. MUW's Brandy Harris led all scorers with 17 points for the visiting Owls (1-0), who had Tenazhia Hinkson corral 12 rebounds.

The Owls lived at the charity stripe, finishing the night 16-of-34 from the free-throw line.

JWU returns to the Wildcat Center on Sunday to host Nebraska Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
