Offense continues to make strides in JWU's loss to St. Olaf

COLORADO SPRINGS – The Johnson & Wales women's basketball team continued to make strides Saturday in a 97-77 loss to St. Olaf to conclude the Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Colorado College.

For the third straight game, the Wildcats (0-4) improved their point total from the previous contest, shooting a season-high 41.7 percent (30-of-72) to exceed their scoring average for the season by more than 27 points.

Freshman Brianna Bailey scored a career-high 25 points and had three steals to lead three Wildcats in double figures. Freshman Katey Guzman reached double figures for the fourth time in as many games, finishing with a career-high 24 to go with six rebounds and five assists. Junior Salma Oros matched a career-best with 14 points.

Guzman (Fort Collins, Colo.) knocked down four 3-pointers while Oros (Buckeye, Ariz.) and Bailey (Colorado Springs, Colo.)  sank three each as the Wildcats made 10 shots from behind the arc.

JWU struggled early in falling behind 24-10 after the opening quarter after shooting just 3-of-15 from the field. But the Wildcats roared back midway through the second frame with an 8-0 run that made it a four-point game, 36-32, with 3:18 to play in the period. The run included consecutive 3s by Oros and Guzman followed by a jumper by Guzman.

The Oles (2-4) responded by regaining a 45-34 halftime lead and remained in control throughout the second half.

The Wildcats return home to host Embry-Riddle on Friday at the Wildcat Center (5:30 p.m.).
