DENVER – A spirited rally by the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team came up just short Sunday afternoon.
Trailing by 18 with less than seven minutes to play in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats stormed back to make it a one-possession game with 13 seconds left after a 3-pointer by Avionne Gomez.
A free throw at the other end by Dallas' Taylor Jobe extended the lead back to four for the visiting Crusaders, who held on for the 76-72 victory at the Wildcat Center.
Gomez (Ignacio, Colo.) scored a career-high 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including a 5-of-9 performance from the 3-point line. Four other Wildcats scored in double figures for coach Bob Kintzel – Katey Guzman with 19, Salma Oros with 12 and Brianna Bailey with 11.
Vanessa Diaz paced the Crusaders (1-10, 1-3 SCAC) with 21 points and six rebounds.
