Wildcats fall short at Schreiner

Avionne Gomez and Brianna Bailey scored 14 points each, but the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team came up a few possessions short of earning its first win of the season in 61-50 loss at Schreiner on Saturday night.

Salma Oros added 10 points and four steals for JWU Denver (0-15, 0-10 SCAC). Katey Guzman finished with eight points, five rebounds and four steals for the Wildcats.

Sydney Williams had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Schreiner (3-13, 3-4) to help the host Mountaineers complete the season sweep.

JWU trailed by 12 heading to the fourth quarter, was able to cut the deficit to seven on a free throw by Bailey at the 7:12 mark but was unable to close the gap any closer.

Player of the game: Avionne Gomez scored in double figures for the third time this season on 6-of-8 shooting and added a career-high nine rebounds.

Stat of the game: JWU shot just 2-of-18 from the 3-point line, the team's worst shooting performance of the season from behind the arc.

Next up: The Wildcats return to the Lone Star state for a non-league game at Dallas Christian.
