DALLAS – Ashley Mortensen made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:07 left in the fourth quarter to help the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team earn a 72-66 non-conference road win at Dallas on Friday night.

Mortensen's triple was the start of a 9-1 run by JWU Denver over the final 67 seconds, capping a 24-point final frame for the Wildcats (1-15) for their first victory of the season. Mortensen (Thornton, Colo.) scored all seven of her points in the fourth.

Katey Guzman scored a game-high 24 points on 8-of-17 shooting and had four steals and three rebounds for JWU. Teammates Salma Oros and Brianna Bailey added 19 points each for coach Bob Kintzel's team.

Oros (Buckeye, Ariz.) was a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line on a night when the Wildcats made a season-high 22 shots from the stripe on 30 attempts. Bailey (Colorado Springs) totaled a career-high five steals as the Wildcats forced the Crusaders (6-9) into 16 turnovers.

JWU trailed 21-18 after the first quarter and fell behind by 10 in the second frame but was able to rally and take a 36-34 halftime lead.

The Wildcats remain in Texas and return to SCAC conference play Saturday at the University of Dallas.
