DALLAS -- Riding the momentum of Friday's triumph over Dallas Christian, the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team earned the first SCAC conference victory in program history on Saturday afternoon with a 62-56 road win over Dallas.
After a long search for its initial win of the season, JWU Denver has now strung together two victories in a row to improve to 2-15 overall and 1-10 in league play.
The Wildcats started fast and built a 14-6 lead midway through the first quarter before the Crusaders (1-17, 1-9) battled back and grabbed a one-point lead at the break. The third quarter proved to be the difference as the Wildcats outscored the hosts 18-6 in the stanza, with eight of those points coming from Bailey (Colorado Springs).
Dallas closed within five a couple times in the fourth, and was down four with 14 seconds to go, but JWU held strong and put the game away.
Player of the game: Katey Guzman continued her fantastic freshman campaign with her fifth 20-point performance in the past seven games, adding a career-high seven steals to go with six assists and four rebounds.
Stat of the game: The Wildcats forced the Crusaders to commit 27 turnovers, leading to 23 JWU points.
Up next: The Wildcats return home to host Texas Lutheran for a White Out on Friday, Feb. 1, followed by a matchup against Southwestern on Saturday. Both games next weekend are part of the SCAC's Change for the Better Campaign, a league-wide initiative to see which school can raise the most money for charity. Wildcat fans are encouraged to bring spare change to next weekend's games Feb. 1-2. All money raised will be donated to Special Olympics of Colorado.
