Wildcats drop Saturday afternoon contest

The Wildcats welcomed Colorado College for the conference finale between the two programs on Saturday afternoon.

JWU started strong in the game with two early three point buckets that helped them find some early momentum. Another three point bucket by Avionne Gomez (Ignacio, Colo.) pushed Johnson & Wales up 9-8. The visiting Tigers started to pull away midway through the first quarter to push their lead up to 28-12 at the end of one. In the second quarter, the Wildcats made small strides but the Tigers continued to find the basket and extended their lead to 39-22 at the break.

In the third quarter, Johnson & Wales made small strides but the Tigers kept their hot shooting going. Each time the Wildcats would make a small run, CC would counter with a bigger push to continue to maintain their lead. The start of the fourth saw the Tigers start slow with Johnson & Wales cutting into their lead. A jump shot by Katey Guzman (Fort Collins, Colo.) with 6:02 left in the fourth put JWU as close as 15 points. After the late push by Johnson & Wales, the Tigers started to fight back and extended the lead to 78-48 by the final buzzer.

Guzman led the Wildcats with 17 points and finished with a team high 9 rebounds. Brianna Bailey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 12 points for Johnson & Wales.

The Wildcats will open their final weekend of the season next Friday night when they host Nebraska Christian College at 6pm in the Wildcat Center. They will close out their 2018-19 season on Saturday at 1pm.
