DENVER – Ball security issues cost the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team in its season finale Saturday against visiting Nebraska Christian College.
The Wildcats committed 20 turnovers, leading to 27 points for the Sentinels to fuel their 71-45 victory at the Wildcat Center.
Brianna Bailey scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead JWU Denver while teammate Katey Guzman recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Avionne Gomez finished with eight points and five boards, and Salma Oros totaled five points, two rebounds and two assists.
JWU finished the season 2-22 while NCC – a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association – finished 15-12.
Jazmyne Santiel scored 20 of her game-high 30 points in the first half to lead NCC. Santiel sank a deep -pointer to beat the first quarter buzzer to give her team a 25-15 lead. The Sentinels extended the cushion to 38-25 at the break.
A 3 by Bailey and a layup by Guzman cut the deficit to single digits, 38-30, at the 6:53 mark of the third quarter, but the Wildcats were unable to close the gap any closer.
