DENVER – Johnson & Wales guard Katey Guzman was named the SCAC Co-Newcomer-of-the-Year on Saturday, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference announced after a vote by the league's coaches.
A native of Fort Collins, Colorado, Guzman averaged 15.5 points, 4.8 rebounds 2.5 assists and 2.4 steals per game. Hailey Coleman of Trinity was the other Co-Newcomer-of-the-Year. Guzman ranked third in the league in scoring thanks to seven games of at least 20 points, including a career-high 30 on Jan. 5 against Centenary.
Guzman also led the SCAC in free throw percentage (80.0) and minutes played (36.6), was second in steals per game and fifth in 3-pointers made per contest (2.0).
In addition to being named the Newcomer of the Year, Guzman was named All-SCAC Honorable Mention, as was JWU Denver teammate and fellow freshman Brianna Bailey. A native of Colorado Springs, Bailey averaged 15.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game.
Bailey ranked sixth in scoring, second in 3-pointers made and 10th in assists.
