Wildcats drop season opener to Whitworth

DENVER - The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team dropped its season opener Sunday afternoon to Whitworth University, 80-45, at the Wildcat Center. 

Sophomore Katey Guzman led the Wildcats with a game-high 19 points while Brianna Bailey joined her classmate in double figures with 15. Guzman and Bailey combined to make seven 3-pointers for JWU Denver. 

Jordan Smith and Talia Brandner each had 16 points to lead the Pirates (2-0), who jumped out to a 23-7 first-quarter lead. 

Four Wildcats made their JWU debut, including sophomore Sariah Serrano, who had five rebounds. Sophomore Allisianna Baker led the Wildcats with seven boards to go with six points. 

The Pirates relied heavily on bench scoring as their reserves out-scored their counterparts 51-7. 

JWU has some time off now before returning to the Wildcat Center on Friday, Nov. 22 to host Denison.
