COLORADO SPRINGS - A tough first quarter cost the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team in a 64-39 loss to Pacific (Ore.) University in the Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday.

The Wildcats (0-5) shot below 20 percent from the field (18.2) in the opening frame, digging themselves a 16-6 hole. JWU came back with a much improved second quarter, but couldn't climb all the way back against the Boxers (3-2), who controlled the paint to the tune of a 34-10 advantage.

Sophomore Katey Guzman led the Wildcats with 17 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Classmate Brianna Bailey joined Guzman in double figures with 12 points to go with six steals.

Freshman Abigail Pare earned her first career start and finished with four points, a total matched by fellow freshman Sariah Serrano. Pare added six rebounds while Serrano led all players with nine boards.

JWU finished with season highs of 11 offensive rebounds and nine steals.

The Wildcats return to action Sunday, Dec. 15 against Southwestern (2 p.m., Wildcat Center) in their SCAC opener.
