SHREVEPORT, La - Sophomore Avionne Gomez exploded for a career-high 32 points to lead the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team to a 58-54 road win over Centenary College on Monday.
Gomez caught fire from deep, going 7-of-11 from the 3-point line to lead the Wildcats (1-8, 1-3) to their first victory of the season. Gomez's performance was just the third 30-point game by an SCAC player this season.
With her team trailing by a point with 4:21 to play, Gomez knocked down her seventh 3 of the game to give the Wildcats a 49-47 lead. Gomez made a jumper shortly after to extend the Wildcats' lead to five, and the visitors never trailed the rest of the way.
The Wildcats totaled seven steals as a team, including three by senior Salma Oros and two by Bailey.
JWU returns home to host the University of Dallas on Friday, Jan. 4 at the Wildcat Center (7:30 p.m.)
