Women's basketball completes season sweep over Centenary

DENVER - The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team rode the hot hand of sophomore Brianna Bailey to a 54-50 SCAC conference victory over visiting Centenary College on Saturday night at the Wildcat Center.

Bailey matched a career high with 27 points, making 8-of-16 from the floor and 8-of-10 free throws to go with nine rebounds and two assists. Saturday's victory clinched a season sweep for JWU Denver over Centenary, the program's first since joining the conference last year.

Sophomore Katey Guzman had 13 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Wildcats (3-13, 3-8), who were tied at halftime before outscoring the Ladies (1-17, 1-10) 23-10 in the third quarter to create some separation.

JWU Denver forced 23 turnovers and totaled 12 steals, the team's second-most in a game this season. Sophomore Avionne Gomez led the way with five steals while freshman Abigail Pare had three.

The Wildcats held the lead for 24-plus minutes, finished with a 10-2 advantage in fastbreak points and a 16-10 edge in points off turnovers.

Johnson & Wales returns to action looking for another season sweep over an SCAC opponent when the Wildcats visit the Dallas Crusaders on Friday.
