'Cats come up short against Clarke

'Cats come up short against Clarke

The Wildcats continued their homestand on Thursday afternoon, hosting Clarke University in a KCAC conference matchup.

The Crusaders got on the board first, driving up the field after the opening draw and putting it past Madison Herbert (Berthoud, Colo.) to give CU the one goal lead. Clarke controlled the offensive tempo early with three goals in the opening five minutes. Herbert made a save just over five minutes into the game as she started to find her defensive rhythm. At 22:29, Elizabeth Cunningham (Ocean City, N.J.) scored the 'Cats first of the game after receiving a pass from Kyleigh Crespo (Colorado Springs, Colo.).

Just under the eight minute mark, Kyra Gangemi (Elkton, Md.) added a second for Johnson & Wales after the 'Cats successfully cleared the ball from their end. Gangemi added a second goal at 3:49 as the Wildcats began to find their opportunities. At halftime, JWU trailed Clarke University 3-12.

The second half saw Gangemi take control of the opening draw and drive to the net. Her attempt was saved by CU's Mackenzie Wieczorek. The Crusaders pushed their lead up to 15-3 after a trio of early goals. Gangemi got one back for Johnson & Wales at 23:05 to stop the Clarke run.

The Wildcats were able to get a couple more back before the final whistle, but ultimately fell 6-19. Gangemi led Johnson & Wales with five goals and Crespo had an assist. Gangemi had seven draw controls and Herbert made 12 saves for the Wildcats.

JWU will hit the road for a Sunday afternoon contest at Missouri Valley.
