JWU drop season finale at St. Mary

The Wildcats closed out their 2017 season on Saturday at the University of Saint Mary.

The Spires jumped out to an early 3-0 lead through opening eight minutes of the contest. Katie Smith (Livermore, Calif.) put the Wildcats on the board at 20:45 as the 'Cats looked to get their offense going. Maleeya Thompson (Collingswood, N.J.) scored for the Wildcats just 20 seconds later as JWU started to find some momentum. Kyra Gangemi (Elkton, Md.) tied the game at three just under a minute later. Gangemi added another at 17:42 as the 'Cats got their first lead of the game.

The Spires put together an eight goal run to close out the half as they took a 11-5 lead into the break.

University of Saint Mary maintained their momentum through the start of the second half, building a 12 goal advantage. Smith stopped the scoring run by the Spires to cut the lead to six at 15:39. Thompson added another goal for the 'Cats with 6:22 to play but the Wildcats fell 20-7 to wrap up their 2017 season.

Gangemi led the Wildcats with three goals and led a trio of 'Cats with four ground balls each. Hanna Jo Eady (Newnan, Ga.) had 13 saves for Johnson & Wales.
