Johnson & Wales opened the home portion of their schedule on Saturday night, hosting #10 Ottawa University in a KCAC matchup.
JWU's Madison Herbert (Berthoud, Colo.) came up with two early saves in the opening three minutes as the visiting Braves looked to assert themselves early. Ottawa got on the scoreboard shortly after to go up 1-0. Abril Rodriguez (Glendale, Ariz.) put the 'Cats first shot on target at 21:32 but Ottawa's Meghan Cubbison made the stop. The Braves used the next 20 minutes to extend their lead to 8-0 before Ashley Guerrero (Downey, Calif.) broke through with 17 seconds left in the half. Ottawa took an 8-1 lead into the break.
In the second half, Kyra Gangemi (Elkton, Md.) added JWU's second goal at 19:25 off a free position shot after being fouled in the critical scoring area. Just a few minutes later, Katie Smith (Livermore, Calif.) took a feed from Gangemi and put it past the Braves goalie to cut the defecit to 9-3. Both sides saw their offense slow as the minutes ticked with the Braves capturing the 15-3 victory.
Four different Wildcats had a shot on goal and Guerrero led the Wildcats with five groundballs. Guerrero also had seven caused turnovers for JWU. Herbert finished with 11 saves.
Johnson & Wales will host St. Ambrose University on Tuesday at 3:30pm at Aurora Sports Park.
