Guerrero nets four in 'Cats loss

Johnson & Wales continued their homestand with a Tuesday afternoon KCAC matchup with St. Ambrose University.

The visiting Queen Bees got off to an early start with a goal in the opening 30 seconds of the contest. Kyra Gangemi (Elkton, Md.) put the first shot on frame for JWU after the restart, but SAU's Elizabeth Zia made the save. Ashley Guerrero (Downey, Calif.) almost broke through a minute later, but Zia again made the stop. Guerrero finally found the back of the net five minutes into the game, putting the ball past Zia to tie the game 1-1. SAU went up 2-1 at 23:09, capitalizing on a Wildcat turnover at midfield. The two sides traded possession for the next eight minute before the Queen Bees found the opportunity for another attempt. Madison Herbert (Berthoud, Colo.) came up big for Johnson & Wales, making saves to keep it a one goal game. Guerrero tied the game 2-2 at 13:01 after the 'Cats cleared their offensive zone.

Herbert again made back to back saves at 6:22 to keep control of the contest. Guerrero netted a hat trick with 1:21 as the Wildcats trailed pulled back within one. SAU added their fifth of the game with 13 seconds to play in the half, taking a 5-3 lead into the break.

Gangemi got her first of the game just after the start of the second, taking a pass from Guerrero and pulling back within one goal. Guerrero tied the game 5-5 at 28:04 after winning the draw and driving right up the field, putting it past Zia. St. Ambrose added two more goals as Johnson & Wales looked to stall the momentum. Gangemi got her second of the game at 16:40 to make it a one goal game again. Johnson & Wales had some late attempts but couldn't make up the difference, falling 10-6.

Guerrero led the Wildcats with seven shots on goal and four goals. She also had four ground balls and five draw controls for JWU. She recorded two caused turnovers. Gangemi finished with six shots on goal and two goals for Johnson & Wales. Herbert had 17 saves for the Wildcats.
