SALEM, Ore. – The Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team opened up the 2019 season with a 16-5 loss at Willamette University on Sunday.
The visiting Wildcats (0-1) were out-shot 20-5 in the first half and trailed 8-1 at intermission. The host Bearcats (1-0) scored the first six goals of the game before Ashley Guerrero (Downey, CA) got JWU on the board with 13:27 to go in the first half.
Early second-half scores by Jochelyn Suglio (Orlando, FL) and Katie Smith (Livermore, CA) cut the deficit to 9-3 before Willamette responded with six straight over the next 10 minutes to put the game away.
Madisyn Tulenchik (Victoria, MN) scored twice in the final 5:33 for the Wildcats to lead JWU with two goals.
The Bearcats finished with a 37-12 edge in shots and a 18-5 advantage in draw controls. Brigid McCollam (New Fairfield, CT) made 11 saves in net for JWU.
The Wildcats continue their four game road trip Tuesday against Whitman.
