ELMHURST, Ill. – The Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team started strong and finished equally as well Sunday to earn a 12-7 road win over Elmhurst College.
A goal by senior Katie Smith (Livermore, CA) on an assist by freshman Jochelyn Suglio (Orlando, FL) in the third minute of the game began a stretch of five unanswered goals for the Wildcats (2-7) as they stormed out to a 5-1 lead. Smith and junior Ashley Guerrero (Downey, CA) scored twice during the 5-0 run that was punctuated with a score by Julianna Lozada (Poway, CA).
Trailing 6-4 at halftime, the host Blue Jays (1-5) rallied to tie the game at the 23:38 mark of the second half. After a scoreless stretch by both teams for the next 10 minutes, freshman Madisyn Tulenchik (Victoria, MN) regained the lead for JWU Denver with one of her three goals in the contest.
Elmhurst answered a few minutes later to tie the game at 7-all with 9:13 remaining. Suglio broke the tie a minute later with an unassisted score, the start of a 5-0 closing run by JWU that also included goals by Smith, Tulenchik and a pair by Guerrero.
Guerrero finished with a game-high four goals for the Wildcats, adding three ground balls and five defensive clears. Smith and Tulenchik each had three goals while Suglio finished with three assists.
Freshman Trent Flanagan (Windermere, FL) started in goal for JWU Denver and made four saves in nearly 24 minutes of action. Classmate Brigid McCollam (New Fairfield, CT) played the final 36-plus minutes and recorded six saves.
