LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome a first-half deficit Friday at the University of Saint Mary (Kansas).
The host Spires (1-9), an NAIA school that competes in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, built a 10-3 lead at halftime en route to a 15-8 victory over the Wildcats (2-9).
Freshman Madisyn Tulenchik (Victoria, MN) scored in the opening minutes of the second half to make it a six-goal game, but JWU Denver was unable to close the gap any closer.
Junior Ashley Guerrero scored four goals to lead the Wildcats, her third game this season with four or more scores. Freshman Julianna Lozada (Poway, CA), sophomore Makayla Miller (Spring, TX) and senior Katie Smith (Livermore, CA) also found the back of the net for JWU.
Freshman Brigid McCollam (New Fairfield, CT) recorded double-digit saves for the fourth time this year with 11 saves. Smith and Guerrero finished with five ground balls each while Guerrero had six shots on goal.
The Spires amassed 38 shots in the game and went 24-of-25 on clears. The Wildcats conclude their two-game Kansas road trip Saturday with an early matchup at Rockhurst University.
