Tulenchik's 5-goal performance not enough

Tulenchik's 5-goal performance not enough

DENVER – The Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team fell short to visiting Loras College by a score of 21-7 on Tuesday evening at Aurora Sports Park despite a career-high give goals by freshman Madisyn Tulenchik (Victoria, MN).

The five scores by Tulenchik are the second-most in a game this season by JWU Denver (2-11), an individual offensive performance surpassed by only junior Ashley Guerrero (Downy, CA) when she had six goals in a win over Whitworth on Feb. 28.

Freshman Jochelyn Suglio (Orlando, FL) assisted on two of Tulenchik's goals, Suglio's second multi-assist game of the season. Suglio also found the back of the net for the fifth time this season while sophomore Marcela Talavera (Newark, TX) scored her second goal of 2019.

The Wildcats started slow, falling behind 7-1 midway through the first half as the Duhawks (6-6) leaned on a balanced offensive attack to build an early lead. But before the Duhawks could pull away any further, the Wildcats climbed back in it by scoring four of the next five goals – two by Tulenchik and one each by Talavera and Suglio to make it 8-5.

JWU was unable to carry that momentum into halftime as Loras closed on a 6-0 run, then scored two more unanswered goals to begin the second frame to go up double digits.

Freshman Brigid McCollam (New Fairfield, CT) made six saves in 36-plus minutes while classmate Trent Flanagan (Windermere, FL) stopped a pair of shots in just over 23 minutes.

The Wildcats conclude the regular season at home Saturday against Dallas University. JWU will honor three seniors – Katie Smith (Livermore, CA), Kaitlyn Warner (Alamonte Springs, FL) and Kyleigh Crespo (Colorado Springs, CO) – before the SCAC matchup that is scheduled for 2 p.m. at ASP.
