Wildcats battle to the end on Senior Day

DENVER – The regular season finale for the Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team came down to the wire Saturday at Aurora Sports Park.

The sixsth goal of the game by junior Ashley Guerrero (Downey, CA) tied the game at 12-all with 6:19 to go in the second half, helping the Wildcats erase a two-goal halftime deficit. But down the stretch the Wildcats were unable to find the back of the net as the visiting Crusaders scored three unanswered goals over the final 3:50 to secure a 15-12 victory.

All three of Dallas' final goals came with a man advantage to help the visitors .

JWU Denver (2-12) honored three Wildcats before the game for Senior Day – defender/midfielder Katie Smith (Livermore, CA), attacker/defender Kyleigh Crespo (Colorado Springs, CO) and attacker Kaitlyn Warner (Alamonte Springs, FL).

Saturday marked the second time this season that Guerrero has scored six goals in a game, matching the team's individual season-high performance Feb. 28. Freshman Madisyn Tulenchik (Victoria, MN)  scored four goals and one assist, her third game with at least four goals this year.

Smith and freshman Jochelyn Suglio (Orlando, FL) produced one score each for JWU while Abril Rodriguez (Glendale, AZ) had an assist.

Guerrero opened the game's scoring with an unassisted goal in the first minute to give JWU an early lead, but the Crusaders answered with three straight to go on top. Guerrero's fourth score of the game off a free position shot with 3:30 left in the first half tied the game at 7-all before Dallas was able to take a 9-7 halftime lead.

Tulenchik scored three times in the first 15 minutes of the second half to keep the Wildcats within reach, setting up Guerrero's game-tying marker at the 6:19 mark. Two and a half minutes later Lexi Leite score what proved to be the game winner for the Crusaders.

Freshman Brigid McCollam (New Fairfield, CT) made 15 saves in net for JWU.

JWU now turns its attention to the SCAC Championship Tournament hosted by Colorado College April 27-28 in Colorado Springs.
