Grizzlies can't escape Wildcats' bear trap

DENVER - The Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season by defeating Division II Adams State 12-10 on Saturday at Denver East High School. 

Sophomore Jochelyn Suglio scored back-to-back goals in the second half to give the Wildcats the lead for good, as her game-winning goal came unassisted with a man down at the 16:42 mark to give the hosts a 9-8 lead. 

Suglio's goals were part of a 4-0 run for JWU Denver and were capped by scores from sophomore Sirena Borja and junior Marcela Talavera. Senior Ashley Guerrero led the Wildcats with four goals, including three in the first half, to go with six ground balls. 

Freshman Alexus Thompson also scored twice while freshman Jillien Gerace led the team with seven ground balls. Sophomore goalie Brigid McCollam made nine saves to earn the victory. 

The Wildcats finished with a 28-21 edge in ground balls, a 39-34 advantage in total shots and a 13-11 plus-margin in draw controls. 

Sopheea Vomund had four goals to lead the visiting Grizzlies. 

JWU is right back at it Sunday against another RMAC foe, Fort Lewis. The contest begins at noon at Shea Stadium in Highlands Ranch.
