Wildcats advance to JWU Cup Championship

The Wildcats opened the 2016 JWU Cup on Friday afternoon with an intercampus contest against JWU North Miami. The tournament features teams from each of the four Johnson & Wales University campuses competing against one another for bragging rights and a traveling trophy.

Kelsie Treloar (Conifer, Colo.) started the offense for Denver early with a shot sent wide in the first minute and then forcing North Miami's Jenna Boersma to make the save in the 3rd minute. The North Miami 'Cats tested Victoria Diaz (San Dimas, Calif.) in the sixth minute but Diaz made the stop. Diaz also made the save in the 12th minute off an attempt by Samantha Klein.

The goalies came up big for their teams making five more saves in total between the two Wildcats before the end of the first half. After 45 minutes of play, Denver held the 11-7 advantage on shots.

In the second half, Denver picked up their offensive pressure with three early attempts. JWU Denver finally broke through in the 62nd minute. Kassidy McKevitt (Fort Collins, Colo.) dribbled the ball up the near side and crossed it in the box to a waiting Natasha Martin (Las Vegas, Nev.) who finished it giving Denver the 1-0 lead.

North Miami tried to even the match a few minutes later but Christina Medina's attempt deflected off the crossbar. The two sides each traded another shot on goal before the final whistle but Denver's defense held up and secured the 1-0 victory.

Treloar led the Denver with five shots and five different players each had a shot on goal. Denver outshot JWU North Miami 23-13 and Diaz made six saves in the win.

Denver will take on JWU Providence on Sunday afternoon at 4:30pm Eastern in the JWU Cup Championship game. A live stream of the Championship is available here.
