Johnson & Wales opened the weekend at Southwestern College on Friday afternoon. Asianna Harris (Las Vegas, Nev.) sent her first attempt high in the third minute of play as the Wildcats looked to get on the board early.
Arianna Flores (Goodyear, Ariz.) opened the scoring in the 18th minute as she faced off in a one vs one battle with the Southwestern keeper. Flores worked around the SC netminder and put JWU up 1-0. Johnson & Wales continued to tkae advantage of offensive opportunities, but their shots were off target.
Katelyn Peters (Brighton, Colo.) was called into action for JWU in the 37th minute, making a save on the attempt by Abbie Woods. JWU closed out the first half with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half the Moundbuilders sent their first attempt of the period wide of target as they looked to find the equalizer. Rebecca Brock (Amarillo, Texas) had a pair of shots saved in the 16th & 17th minutes as JWU sought an insurance goal.
Peters made another save with just over 13 minutes left to play, keeping the shutout going. With 4:21 left on the clock, the Moundbuilders were called for a foul in the box, sending Flores to the penalty spot. She converted the attempt, putting JWU up 2-0 with just a few minutes left to play. Brock had another attempt blocked late but Johnson & Wales walked away with the 2-0 win.
Flores had a team high three shots on goal and Brock had four total attempts. Johnson & Wales put six shots on frame in the match and Peters made both saves she was faced with.
