The Wildcats opened their 2017 season on Friday afternoon with a home contest against St. Thomas University (Fla.) at Aurora Sports Park.
Johnson & Wales got on the board first in the eighth minute as Rebecca Brock (Amarillo, Texas) slotted a pass through the box to Kassidy McKevitt (Fort Collins, Colo.) who knocked it in from about four yards out. Following the restart, the Bobcats tested the Wildcat's keeper but Katelyn Peters (Brighton, Colo.) made the stop. She came up again for the Wildcats in the 16th minute to keep the one goal advantage. Asianna Harris (Las Vegas, Nev.) almost doubled the lead a few seconds later but STU's Cristina Garwacki made the save.
In the 28th minute, Jannel Johnson chipped in a ball from 20 yards out that beat Peters to tie the contest 1-1. The Bobcats offense kept up the tempo but their shots were off target as the game went into the break tied 1-1.
In the second half, the Bobcats continued to pepper the Wildcat's defense but Johnson & Wales kept up their defensive hold. Harris had another attempt saved in the 66th minute as the 'Cats looked for the go-ahead goal. Peters came up big for Johnson & Wales throughout the second half with needed stops that sent the game into extra time.
Throughout extra time, Peters continued to come up huge for JWU as she notched six saves throughout the 20 minutes of extra time. Without a second goal for either side, the match ended in a 1-1 double overtime draw in both squad's season opener.
Peters made 11 saves for Johnson & Wales in the draw and Harris had two shots on goal for the 'Cats. Johnson & Wales will host McPherson College on Monday at 12:00pm at Aurora Sports Park to wrap up their opening week.
