AURORA - Sophomore Katherine Owings' goal in the 26th minute and stout defense by the Wildcats paved the way for a 1-0 victory by the Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team over visiting Texas Lutheran on Friday at Aurora Sports Park.
Owings netted her first goal of the season off a nifty feed from Natasha Martin in the box to put JWU Denver on the board.
"I just saw Tash looking and me, and I knew she was going to pass it to me, so I was just ready," Owings said.
That goal was all the Wildcats needed for their first SCAC victory of the season as the JWU defense limited the Bulldogs five total shots, three that were on goal and stopped by senior keeper Katelyn Peters.
JWU protected the lead beautifully, holding TLU without a shot over the final 23 minutes to secure the win.
After battling injuries for the first half of the season, the Wildcats are getting healthier and starting to hit their stride in the midst of conference play with Friday's win that followed a pair of close defeats last weekend. Coach Ria Denny's team will look to build on this with Sunday's matchup against Southwestern.
Sunday's 11 a.m. contest will be played at Field 46 at Aurora Sports Park, located on the southeastern part of the complex.
