DENVER - Sophomore Katherine Owings' goal in the 98th minute lifted the Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory over Schreiner University on Saturday night at Aurora Sports Park.
Freshman Brooke Ford set up the game-winner with a run through the Mountaineer defense up the right side, sending a cross to Owings right in front. Owings' one-timer to the lower left punctuated a proper sendoff for five Wildcat seniors - Katelyn Peters, Natasha Martin, Amanda Fischer, Rebecca Brock and Hailey Jensen - who were honored before the match on Senior Day.
Peters made three saves to record her team-record ninth shutout of her career in her final game in the blue and gold.
JWU was in control for much of the SCAC match, out-shooting SU 17-7 and finishing with a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Owings led the Wildcats with three shots on goal, followed by two from Brock and one by sophomore Samantha Roybal.
Saturday's victory capped the 2019 season for the Wildcats, who finished 5-12-0 overall under first-year coach Ria Denny. With a 3-5 mark in conference play, JWU sits in fifth place in the conference standings with the eight other teams still two or more matches still left to play.
