'Cats wrap up indoor season at Mines

The Wildcats wrapped up their 2017 Indoor season on Saturday at the Joe Davies Classic hosted by Colorado School of Mines.

Samatha Barela (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Olivia Redmann (Englewood, Fla.) got the day going for the Wildcats with the 3000 meter event. Barela finished third overall with a time of 11:14.23 followed by Redmann in 13th at 11:42.42. In the 60 meter dash prelims, Brandi Williams-Beck (San Antonio, Texas), Catherine Carbeck (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Kelci Freeman (Ramona, Calif.) represented JWU in the event. Williams-Beck finished with a time of 8.05 to qualify for the finals later in the day. Carbeck came across the line in 8.39 followed by Freeman at 8.76. In the finals, Williams-Beck finished in 7th place overall with a time of 8.10.

The 400 meter event saw Ashley Jackson (Denver, Colo.) and Carbeck step up to the startiing line. Carbeck finished with a time of 1:02.81 and Jackson crossed the line at 1:07.23.  In the 200 meter race, Freeman, Jackson, and Williams-Beck featured for JWU. Williams-Beck and Jackson tied for second place with an identical 27.24 finish. Freeman came in at 30.00 for Johnson & Wales.

In the field events, Katie Malachinski (Stevensville, Mont.) competed in the long jump, finishing with a distance of 4.66 meters. She also competed in the high jump, clearing 1.53 meters in the event. Barela bookended the day for Johnson & Wales with the 1 mile race, finishing in 8th place with a time of 5:35.49.

The Wildcats will begin their outdoor season in late March at the Colorado College Invitational.
