Johnson & Wales wrapped up their weekend with two early matches at the 2016 Peru State College Fall Classic.
In their first match of the day, the 'Cats took on the Falcons of Friends University. The opening set saw the two sides trade scoring opportunities with JWU taking small leads. The Falcons fought their way back in each time but Johnson & Wales was able to hold them off taking the opening set 30-28. The 'Cats had 22 kills in the opening set with both Kelley McLain (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Brittney Mukhar (Lancaster, Calif.) each had eight kills in the set.
In the second set, the Wildcats had a better run as they flew out to a 25-21 victory. Erin Sosnowchik (Omaha, Neb.) had six kills in the set for Johnson & Wales. The third set began with the Falcons leading 6-3 before the Wildcats rallied back to tie the contest at 6-6. McLain notched her 1,000th kill midway through the set, taking a set by Mary Acord (Granby, Colo.) and putting it past the Falcons to tie the contest 11-11. The two teams continued to trade points with four lead changes throughout the set. Friends University ultimately took the third set 29-27.
The fourth set saw the Wildcats take charge and firmly control the pace of the final set. After leading 9-3, the Wildcats saw the Falcons come back into the contest to trail 13-10. The 'Cats regrouped and shut down the Falcons, closing out the match on a 12-2 run to take the 25-12 win.
McLain led all players with 19 kills in the match and hit .306 in the contest. Mukhar and Sosnowchik also had double-digit kills with 17 and 15 respectively. Acord had 33 assists for Johnson & Wales and Sierra Joyner (Oxnard, Calif.) had 25 digs. JWU hit .251 in the match with 69 total kills.
In the second match of the day, Johnson & Wales took on host Peru State College. In the opening set the Bobcats put together small scoring runs to power their way to a 25-19 set victory. The Bobcats notched 18 kills to the Wildcats 11 in the opening set. The second set the Bobcats again capitalized on scoring runs to take the 25-18 victory.
The final set was a lot like the first two with the Bobcats jumping out early and the Wildcats not able to complete the comeback. In the match the Wildcats hit just .160 while the Bobcats hit .261 with 47 kills.
Mukhar had 12 kills for Johnson & Wales and Acord had 16 assists. Joyner had 19 digs for the Wildcats.
JWU will travel to California for a midweek match at San Diego Christian College before taking part in the 2016 Cougar Classic at Cal State San Marcos.
