The Wildcats opened their Southern California roadtrip with an 0-3 loss at San Diego Christian College on Wednesday night.
Johnson & Wales began the first set on a 4-1 run before San Diego Christian rallied to tie the contest 4-4. The 'Cats rattled off a three point run to go back up 7-4 on the Hawks but again SDCC staged a comeback. The Hawks put together a 5-0 run to take the 10-5 advantage. The two sides traded short scoring bursts never allowing the other side to build too much of a lead. San Diego Christian capitalized on a 6-0 run to power their way to a 25-20 win.
In the second set the Wildcats again started hot but the Hawks came back to take a 5-3 lead. Each time that Johnson & Wales were able to gain a lead, San Diego Christian would put together a run to retake the lead. After trailing 12-18, the 'Cats used a five point run with Cassandra Lacanilao (Oxnard, Calif.) on the line serving to come back to a 17-18 deficit. The Wildcats went up 20-19 but the lead was short-lived before the Hawks closed out the set 25-21.
In the third set, Johnson & Wales opend on a 7-3 run before SDCC rallied to take an 8-7 lead. Each time the Hawks built a lead the Wildcats fought their way back and kept the set competitive. In the end, San Diego Christian had just enough left in the tank to take the 25-22 win.
The Wildcats hit just 0.123 in the match while San Diego Christian hit .293. Kelley McLain (Simi Valley, Calif.) had a team high 10 kills for the Wildcats and Mary Acord (Granby, Colo.) notched 19 assists. Lacanilao had 13 digs for Johnson & Wales in the loss.
The 'Cats will stay local and take part in the Cougar Classic at Cal State San Marcos on Friday and Saturday. JWU will take on Fort Lewis College on Friday at 12:00 pm Pacific.
