'Cats come up short on Saturday

Johnson & Wales wrapped up their opening weekend on Saturday with a morning contest against Wayland Baptist University. 

After jumping out to a 4-0 start to begin the contest, the Wildcats saw Wayland Baptist rattle off 10 straight points. The Pioneers used another late run to hold off the 'Cats for the 25-10 victory. In the second set, the two teams battled back and forth with Wayland Baptist holding the slight edge late on their way to a 25-18 set victory. In the final set the 'Cats overcame a five point deficit to take a 15-14 lead over the Pioneers. Wayland Baptist again went out front but JWU added another five point run to lead 22-21. The back and forth continued with the two sides tied at 25-25. The Pioneers were able to capture the final two points and get the 27-25 victory.

Katie Malachinski (Stevensville, Mont.) led the Wildcats with 12 kills and Brooke Paxton (Greeley, Colo.) had 17 digs. Ashlee Ruehs (Phoenix, Ariz.) had 18 assists for Johnson & Wales.

The Wildcats travel to Prescott, Arizona next weekend for a tournament at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
