JWU drops pair of Saturday contests

The Wildcats closed out the weekend with a pair of matches at College of the Ozark's Chick-fil-a tournament on Saturday.

The first match of the day saw the Wildcats taking on Wayland Baptist University. WBU opened up on a 5-0 run before the 'Cats got on the board. The Wildcat's point broke up what proved to be a 16-1 run for Wayland Baptist as they jumped out to a commanding lead. The 'Cats added a couple more points but WBU's offense was too much to overcome as the 'Cats fell 25-12 in the opening set. The second set had Johnson & Wales open with better momentum but WBU broke up a 7-6 Wildcat lead to go on a six point run to flip the momentum. Another late run allowed WBU to take the second set 25-11. In the third, WBU held the small advantage early but the 'Cats cut the deficit to three points midway through the set. WBU pulled ahead but Johnson & Wales rallied to come close before falling 25-23 in the final set.

Erin Sosnowchik (Omaha, Neb.) led the 'Cats with eight kills and Erynn Keeney (Thornton, Colo.) added seven more kills.

In the second match of the day, the Wildcats took on John Brown University. The game started with back and forth play with the two sides trading points. John Brown used a four point run to begin to pull away. The 'Cats added a couple more before JBU went on a 6-1 run to build some distance. John Brown took the first set 25-18. In the second set, John Brown University opened on a 10-2 run to set the tone. The Wildcats pulled back a couple more points but JBU captured the 25-19 win. In the third set, the Wildcats had a couple of early points before JBU regrouped and went on an 8-2 run to pull away. They used another 6-2 run to build the distance they needed on their way to the 25-15 win.

Katie Malachinski (Stevensville, Mont.) led JWU with nine kills and Ashlee Ruehs (Phoenix, Ariz.) added 24 assists.

The Wildcats will return home for their next contest after spending the last six weeks on the road. They'll face South Dakota School of Mines on Friday, October 6 at 12:00pm MT in the Wildcat Center.
