JWU splits Friday contests

Johnson & Wales headed to Dallas for a SCAC crossover weekend at the University of Dallas on Friday. The first match of the weekend saw the Wildcats take on Texas Lutheran University.

The Wildcats opened the first set on a 4-0 run before TLU found their way on to the scoreboard. The Bulldogs rallied from a four point deficit to tie the game at 6-6 and reset the match. JWU found another run to go up 13-9 on TLU but the Bulldogs again fought back with an 8-0 run to lead 17-13. The Wildcats fought back to tie the set 19-19 but TLU finished the game on a 6-1 run to grab the 25-20 victory. JWU began the second set with another hot start to lead 6-2 and force TLU to take a timeout. The Bulldogs came back within two points but JWU rattled off five straight points to extend their lead to 16-9. Texas Lutheran tried to fight their way back in but Johnson & Wales fought off the run and took the 25-21 win.

The two sides battled early through the opening points with Johnson & Wales holding an 11-10 advantage midway through. The Bulldogs had six points for the rest of the set as Johnson & Wales powered their way to the 25-16 victory and lead two sets to one. In the fourth, Texas Lutheran had an early lead but JWU came back to tie the set 4-4. The Wildcats held the 10-8 lead before Texas Lutheran tied the set 10-10. Johnson & Wales found another gear to build a 20-13 lead but the Bulldogs began to fight back. TLU battled back to tie the set 23-23 but the last two points went to JWU for the 25-23 win and the 3-1 match victory.

Ashlee Ruehs (Phoenix, Ariz.) led all players with 17 kills and hit .316 in the match. Kaitlin Jones (LaSalle, Colo.) had a game high 27 digs and Jacquelyn Ortiz (Cypress, Calif.) finished with 18 assists.

In the second match of the day the Wildcats faced Schreiner University.

JWU came out on a 4-1 run to get an early start in the match. Johnson & Wales pushed their lead up to 16-9 but the Mountaineers fought back and went ahead 20-19. The final points went back and forth but Schreiner held on to take the 26-24 win. In the second, Schreiner led 7-4 before JWU cut the lead down to one point. The Mountaineers extended their lead to 15-7 and looked to have the momentum. JWU came back to pull within two points but Schreiner grabbed the final two points to take the 25-21 win. The third set saw Schreiner start strong and hold the lead throughout the set. Johnson & Wales was able to come within a point or two a couple of times but the Mountaineers held them off for the 25-21 win and match victory.

Brooke Paxton (Greeley, Colo.) had 13 kills and hit .314 for Johnson & Wales. Ruehs added another 13 kills to finish the day with 30 kills. Jones picked up another 17 digs and Brea Chaney (Commerce City, Colo.) had two solo blocks.

Johnson & Wales (1-14, 1-5 SCAC) will take on #13 Trinity University (13-4, 5-0 SCAC) at 4pm CT and then face off against weekend host University of Dallas (10-6, 3-2 SCAC) at 7pm CT.
