Presentation tops JWU in 2019 season opener

DENVER – The Johnson & Wales University women's volleyball team opened the 2019 season Friday with a 3-0 loss to visiting Presentation in the first day of the Mile High Challenge.

Senior Brooke Paxton finished with 10 kills to just one error to go with eight digs to lead the Wildcats. Freshman Hope Hines added 12 digs and three kills while classmate Sierra Martin had four kills and four block assists.

Sophomore Kaitlin Jones tallied nine digs and classmate Jacquelyn Ortiz finished with two aces in the Wildcats' season opener.

Lexi Begger matched Paxton with a match-best 10 kills to lead the visiting Saints, who won by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-17.

JWU Denver hit .100 in the opening set but saw its effectiveness wane the next two sets, finishing the match at .049.

The Wildcats continue the Mile High Challenge later on Friday evening against Dickinson State (6 p.m.) followed by matches Saturday against Friends (noon MT) and Wayland Baptist (6 p.m.).
