DENVER – Freshman Hope Hines finished with 11 kills and 12 digs to lead the Johnson & Wales University volleyball team to its first victory of the season Friday, topping visiting Rockford University 3-0 to open the Wildcat Invitational.

JWU Denver (1-4) leaned on a balanced offense attack as five Wildcats finished with at least five kills, including seniors Brooke Paxton and Ashlee Ruehs (six each) and freshmen Hunter Halbower (six) and Sierra Martin (five).

Sophomore Jacquelyn Ortiz dished out 17 assists and Ruehs finished with 10 as JWU hit a season-high .267 in the 25-10, 25-13, 25-20 victory.

The Wildcats set the tone early, hitting .250 in a commanding first-set victory, and finished strong, limiting themselves to just two errors in the final set.

JWU continues the Wildcat Invitational later Friday against Mills College.
