Wildcats win second straight with another sweep

DENVER – The Johnson & Wales University volleyball team wrapped up a stellar opening day of the Wildcat Invitational with a sweep over visiting Mills College on Friday night at the Wildcat Center.

Sophomore Jacquelyn Ortiz (21 assists) and senior Ashlee Ruehs (13) orchestrated a JWU Denver offense that set season highs for kills (44) and attack percentage (.290) in the 25-11, 25-14, 25-13 victory.

"It's just a really awesome feeling coming out early in the season and make our presence known, especially on our home court," Ruehs said. "It's a great time have our fans out here supporting us.

"We played really well today. We had a lot of connections that went really well. We were picking up a lot of balls. We played as one family, one unit out there, and that's super important to us."

Senior Brooke Paxton and freshman Hope Hines led all players with nine kills each while Ruehs added eight and freshman Sierra Martin five for coach Alicia Roth's team.

Hines also totaled 14 digs while sophomore Kaitlin Jones came up with 13.

JWU was in total control throughout the three-set match, limiting the Cyclones to a -.013 hitting percentage.

The hosts conclude the tournament Saturday with tilts against Marian (1 p.m.) and Illinois Tech (7 p.m.).
